Thania Ibarra Narváez is an archaeologist by the Universidad de las Américas Puebla, and she obtained her master’s degree in Conservation and Restoration of Immovable Cultural Herritage by the Escuela Nacional de Conservación, Restauración y Museografía “Manuel del Castillo Negrete” (ENCRyM-INAH). She has specialized in the study of mesoamerican architecture from the perspective of material sciences, focusing particularly on artisanal production and construction techniques. Her research has been undertaken considering political ecology, and the study of environmental management, particularly the relationship between materials, innovation, environment, and politics.
She has worked in several archaeological sites in central Mexico and in the Mayan Lowlands like Dzibilchaltún, Yaxunáh, Palenque, and sites in the Cochuah region. Her work at the Plaza of the Columns Project at Teotihuacan has focused on excavation, field registration, analysis, and architecture conservation.
Her master’s thesis centered on architectural analysis in the Dzibilchaltún region at Yucatán, in which she could identify key moments in the innovation and experimentation regarding lime mortar technology used in different sited through time. This study allowed a better understanding of the constructive processes in the region, including the availability of raw materials and the management of jungle natural resources.
